So i think i have finally settled on a process that conveys the emotions i want for my project (pinhole, embroidery and encaustic [it isn't encaustic in this image though]) this image symbolizes hope. Im very excited with this new direction, any thought on size, keeping in mind that this took a solid 12+ hours to stitch and its a 8x8 and i don't want to have to do something ridiculous to dip them in wax (unless you know of sum were that would let me fill large tubs with wax)

I did these exactly the same as paper lumens only i did them on 4x5 sheets of film the exposures was some between 1 and 2 hours. then fixed in the paper fix and hypo clear and washed. there is a short article on the alternative photography website too http://www.alternativephotography.com/wp/processes/lumen/lumen-negatives

Here's a new project I started working on this summer, dealing with the places of my childhood memories. I used expired portra 160nc in hopes that the color shift will add to the memory like quality. I am hoping the light leak was something that happened while I was developing (in my bathroom). But it is a new camera (to me) so we'll see what happens when I develop a roll in a light tight room.

After we arrived in Vienna, and found Quinn and Kristen we quickly realized 3 things,

We couldn't pronounce a word of German
We were way too immature for German
Trains are not ideal if you want a good nights sleep

as i had said before we ended up taking a cab to the hotel after getting a little settled and cleaned up we decided to venture out to find some breakfast/ lunch. After a deliciousness meal of gazpacho, goulash, apple strudel and hot chocolate we were feeling much better about the day ahead of us.

We then took the tram into the city center. I can't even begin to explain how beautiful Vienna was, all the leaves were yellow or red and had begun to fall. The tram station was more of a pavilion which looked out onto Sigmund Freud park, (not to be confused with the Siegfried and Roy, two other notable Austrians one of whom was eaten by his pet tiger). across from the park was a beautiful Gothic cathedral, called Votivkirche. We walked around the park for a wile admiring the sculptures and then ventured over to the cathedral.

The out side of the cathedral was under construction (i think) so the bottom was blocked off by chain link fences and McDonalds billboards. Inside was breathtaking we had come at a time in the day when the sun was coming through the stained glass windows just so, painting the cathedral in pinks, greens, purples, and yellows.

We then continued to wander along the ring (the road that circles the city center, most of the sights are along here) we found another garden wear Kristen was starting to lose her enthusiasm from lunch and napped in a park chair wile we enjoyed the sun (it was no longer cold just a little brisk), and played in the leaves (you would have never known we were between the ages of 19 and 22). After getting our fill of fall fun we scoped out the concert house and its gallery (entry hall). After words we decided to get on the hop on hop off buss to get a tour around the ring. Kristen at this point was feeling very tiered (her and quins train experience wasn't nearly as good as ours and the lack of sleep was getting to her) so the bus seamed like a very good idea.

Pros of the hop on hop off bus:

Transportation that doesn't involve potentially getting lost
You actually know what your looking at
Great for the weary traveler/ Kristen got a nap

Cons of the hop on hop off but:

You are on a bus when the weather is nice and it takes up a large chunk of your day.
Every one on the bus is old
The windows have been specifically made to produce a reflection in every picture you take.
and the seats are set up in a way that no matter what someone will be in your picture.

A double whammy a finger and a reflection

After about an hour we decided to get off the bus at another cathedral, the one where Mozart got married and survived the bombings during world war two. We went into the church but there was a wedding so you couldn't really see it or take pictures because you could only stand in the very back because there was a fence to keep the tourists out of the wedding. By this point it was getting fairly late so we decided to get something sweet and caffeinated to raise our blood sugar so we went to a cafe wear we enjoyed some of the classic Viennese desserts and coffee. After this we decided to walk back to the tram station (we were in the heart of the city at this point and needed to walk off the bazillion calories from the desserts we had eaten) When we got back to the tram station the cathedral was lit up, and looked very pretty against the night sky.

When we got back to the hotel we rested for a little bit then went out to an Irish pub for a light dinner and beers, here is wear I discovered the wonderfulness of Strongbow Cider yummmm. =p

      So it's probably high time I started actually writing in my blog considering I'm in Europe and what not. Now lets be completely honest here the only reason I am actually writing is to avoid the mountain of homework at the foot of my bed, literally a mountain, and after the work eases of you probably won't see more than two sentences per post, if that, until midterms next semester.
        My 10 day break was amazing! (nope not starting at the beginning, if Dante can do it so can I) Looking back now its a blur of trains, subways, buss's, bikes and the beagle (I'll explain later). So the trip started out with a trip to the hardware store, yes the hardware store, our (my room mate Chelsie and my) absolutely adorable host dad was giving us a ride to the train station but had to run by the hardware store first. What a typical dad. Upon arriving at the train station we noticed that we were an hour and a half early for our Italian train to Florence (nothing in Italy runs on time I LOVE IT!!) Quin and Kristen (the rest of our traveling group) met us at the station about an hour later we got our tickets all figured out and boarded the train to Florence.

        The train to Florence wasn't very eventful, in fact it wasn't eventful at all. In the Florence train station we had about a 2 hour wait till our train came. We got pizza at one of the station restaurants, and then got on the train. (I realize up to this point it has been a lot of we did this and then we did this but what can you expect I'm a photographer not a writer ~~but there will be pretty pictures =]~~ nope turns out I didn't take pictures till after we got to Vienna.... just checked face book and none of us did so pretty pictures will have to wait till the next post)
        Now if you have ever been on a night train you will know what I'm talking about, but for those of you who haven't let me give you a brief overview. The way ticketing works is you can pay extra to reserve a seat or just pay for a ticket, so when the train pulls up people who don't have tickets make a mad dash for all the empty seats and then hope no one has a ticket for that seat. After this everyone else gets on the train, the corridors are probably a little over a foot wide and packed with people and luggage trying to find their cabin, now imagine a train car with a door on either end now put an imaginary line in the middle of it. Now Murphy's law states that if your cabin is on the right side of the line you will without a doubt get on the train from the left and if your cabin is on the left you will enter the train from the right. so as you can imagine you are fighting your way up stream to arrive at your car wear your seat is already occupied. after the initial confusion you realize that yes you are in the right car, cabin and yes that this is your seat. so then you feel like the worlds biggest jerk for kicking the person in your seat out of your seat and apologize a million times (even though you paid for the seat). then the person who's seat you took proceeds to help you put your luggage on the shelf, because Europeans are just so darn polite, making you feel like even more of a jerk.
        I wish i took a picture of our cabin because it was almost comical (It was somewhat like the Hogwarts express, but in reality the movie "Eurotrip" got it more accurately click to see the video it also has Italians pretty much to a T). There are 6 seats that recline but not in a way that you could ever sit in computably unless you were willing to get very cozy with the person across from you (if you reclined both the seats across from each other it would form a bed about the width of a cot great for one person, not two, but we made it work). It was just Chelsea and me from our group in this cabin along with an older Austrian couple and a younger Italian woman and her son (cutest kid ever). By some stroke of luck we were all sitting across from our traveling partner so we reclined our chairs and got cozy (there were arm rests luckily so it wasn't too bad ). The worst of this train experience was the man next to Chelsea apparently smelled like cold cuts so she got to smell that all night long, I couldn't smell them due to the fact that I was face to feet with Chels (I'm sure my feet were smelling pretty nice at that point to) at about 4 am the Austrian couple got off the train so Chelsea and I each got our own "bed" and slept until we arrived in Vienna at about 8 am.
Getting off the train was a rude awakening to the senses, it was FREEZING. It took us about 10 minutes to realize that our directions to our hotel weren't going to work to well since the street sines were no were to be found. So we hailed a cab and headed to our hotel.

        so this is wear I'm going to stop for tonight because I still have to wright the rest of my sociolinguistics paper and cinema review "woof". But don't worry I have an Art History outline I have to do for Tuesday so you can pretty much guarantee I will be blogging again instead of home work.

Finally got around to posting so here is what i worked on in class today. Just some edits from class today =) These were taken at the end of summer in RAW on a 5D Mark II (such an amazing camera) down at Yellowstone by Old Faithful. More to come promise =p
